DISCOVER OUR PROCESSING PLANT

Semican is pursuing its development by diversifying and innovating with this state-of-the-art feed and food processing plant. The company’s unique business model allows Semican to contribute to the sustainability of agriculture in Canada by buying back locally grown crops and delivering processed grains to the end consumer. Food processing affords Semican the opportunity to increase crop value for producers and offer quality products for the food market. In the context of striving to feed the world in a sustainable manner, plant protein is a major stake for the future. With its Research Center and certified processing plant, Semican is leading the way, developing new varieties, creating synergies, and assuring both supply and supply chain traceability.
The processing line for pot and pearled barley, now in operation, provides a ready-to-eat grain that qualifies for both human and animal consumption. Semican’s value-added program ensures that producers receive added value for their crops, in one category or the other. An oat processing line will be the next addition to the plant.

POT AND PEARLED BARLEY

(TRADITIONAL AND ORGANIC)

sac-orge-monde.png

What is pot barely? Barley is a cereal that belongs to the grass family. Pot barley, also called hulled barley, is a whole grain from which the outer husk has been removed, leaving the bran layer and kernel intact. Widely used in the brewing industry and in whiskey production, pot barley is a highly nutritious grain, full of essential nutrients!

What is pearled barley? Contrary to pot barley, pearled barley is not considered a whole grain, as both the husk and bran layer have been removed. Because it is refined, pearled barley contains fewer nutrients than pot barley, but has similar dietary benefits, among them its soluble fibre.

What are the main nutritional advantages? High in soluble fibre and protein and low in fat, both pot and pearled barley are ideal ingredients of a balanced diet that helps prevent certain cancers, cholesterol, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. They are also a good source of vitamin B as well as a number of minerals: iron, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, copper, and selenium. Barley is a cereal you definitely want to include in your daily diet!

How do you prepare it? Cook it like rice or quinoa, then eat it hot or cold.
